Foundation Vibrations And Dynamic Soil-Structure Interaction

7 ECTS

Integrated course (lectures and exercises) in the summer semester.
Compulsory elective module.

Syllabus

Content

This course gives essential information that belongs to various disciplines in civil engineering applications, such as soil dynamics, wave dynamics, foundation dynamics, and structural dynamics, for analyzing the soil-foundation-structure interaction problem under human-made environmental ground surface vibrations (optionally including site response for seismic waves).

  • Basic Definitions of Vibrating Systems
  • Mechanical Characteristics of Soil Dynamics
  • Review of Waves Propagation in the Soil and Ground-Borne Vibrations
  • Representation of Strong Ground Motion (Optional)
  • Intro to Site Response Analysis in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering (Optional)
  • Impedance Functions for Analyzing of Foundation Vibrations under Dynamic Loads
  • Wave Barriers for Vibration Isolation of Foundations
  • Sub-structural Method for Analysis of Soil-Foundation-Structure Interaction Problem

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

Students herewith gain ability both examine the collective dynamic response of the soil-foundation-structure interaction problem and the dynamic behavior of foundations subjected to ground-borne surface vibrations. They will be able to learn the basic features of simplified modeling techniques used in engineering applications for the analysis of integrated systems.

  • Lectures and demonstrations by visual aids
  • Interactive learning by discussion on the topics of structural, earthquake and geotechnical/foundation engineering
  • Case Studies and Practice problems by group works
